MISSION AND VALUES

The Irondequoit United Church of Christ is guided by this statement of our mission:

We extend God’s love and extravagant welcome to all to share in our community of worship and following Jesus, to work together toward a more just world.

What does this mean?

We know it’s important to you to know, and there are many ways we can tell you more about what we believe at Irondequoit UCC:

We affirm our responsibility to make the church of Jesus Christ relevant today while preserving the core understandings of the Christian faith.

We recognize two sacraments:  Baptism and the Lord's Supper.

We celebrate the unique gifts of each person.

We understand that reformation and change helps make our faith relevant, exciting, and personal.

We live as a forward thinking congregation.  We organize ourselves around our mission, and empower individuals and groups in all their callings.

We honor your spiritual journey, including your questions and doubts.

We think faith is about more than Sunday worship.

We don’t claim to know what God thinks, but we know what Jesus asks us to do, including feeding the hungry, comforting the afflicted, sheltering the homeless, and nurturing the young.

We believe in inclusiveness and hospitality.

The Bible

We believe that "God is still speaking." We believe that the persistent search for God produces an authentic relationship with God, engendering love, strengthening faith, dissolving guilt and giving life purpose and directions.  Our study of the Bible supports this journey.

The Holy Spirit

Our overarching creed is love.  We believe that the Holy Spirit guides and brings about the creative and redemptive work of God in the world.  Love and unity in the midst of our diversity are our greatest assets.

Return of Christ

We believe that Jesus calls us to be servants in the service of others.  As he taught the apostles, Jesus calls us to do his work until he comes again; speaking truth to power, liberating the oppressed, caring for the poor, and comforting the afflicted.

NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE OR WHERE YOU ARE ON LIFE'S JOURNEY, YOU ARE WELCOME HERE.

Open and Affirming (ONA)

Irondequoit United Church of Christ is committed to being open to, and welcoming of, every person who feels led to our church, and we are always purposeful in growing our ability to do so.  Our faith community is enriched by a diverse community of individuals, couples, and all types of families. All are welcome to be fully involved in the church's life.

Irondequoit UCC formally adopted, by congregational vote, to be an Open and Affirming congregation on May 15, 2011.

In the United Church of Christ, Open and Affirming (ONA) means that a church has publicly and specifically declared that people who identify as LBGTQI are welcome in the church’s full life and ministry. We do so in a spirit of hospitality and a willingness to live out that welcome in meaningful ways.

ALL are invited to worship and to fully participate in all opportunities and events that take place as part of life at Irondequoit UCC.
